On the occasion of its 18th annual General Assembly, on 17 June 2010, ASF is organising 2 roundtable discussions which are intended to provide a forum for reflection and the sharing of experience and expertise on topics linked to ASF’s ongoing projects.
 
These roundtables will focus on two totally different contexts where ASF is operating: the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Israel/Palestine context.
The two following themes will be discussed consecutively:

• The Rome Statute System and the DRC: 8 years after Ratification
• Israel/Palestine: Opportunities and Challenges of the Investigation of Human Rights Abuses in the Aftermath of the Goldstone Report

The Directorate of Communication of the Council of Europe (www.coe.int) – an international organisation dedicated to safeguarding and promoting human rights, as enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights – is launching a competition to mark the 60th Anniversary of this flagship Convention, which was opened for signature on 4 November 1950. 

The competition is open to all law students in Europe and in particular to members of the European Law Students Association (ELSA). ELSA (www.elsa.org) is the world’s largest non-profit making, student association, of which 30,000 law students and recent graduates from 200  law faculties in 40 countries across Europe are members. In recognition of its legal and human rights education, which is promoted through academic events and training programmes, ELSA enjoys the status of ‘Human Rights Partner’ with the Council of Europe.

Under the overall slogan 'Our Rights, our Freedoms', the competition - divided into an essay competition and a photo competition - is designed to appraise the history and achievements of the European Convention and Court of Human Rights.

Participants are invited to submit an essay assessing the achievements and shortcomings of the Strasbourg legal system. The subject of the essay competition is ‘What is the role of freedom of speech in a democratic society and where are its limits? The photography theme is the impact of the European Convention on Human Rights on the everyday lives of Europe's citizens.
